The premature lifting of legal Covid measures by government has led to severe stress and confusion for schools, pupils and parents as we battled the recent wave of infections.

This has has left many asking “what should my school be doing now?”

The answer is that employers still have a legal responsibility to follow all the government’s public health guidance relating to Covid, including guidance for people with symptoms of a respiratory infection including Covid-19. They also have to take account of their legal health and safety responsibilities as employers. This means that your school should still be conducting general risk assessments (including measures to identify and reduce risks from Covid) and supporting staff with any Covid symptoms to stay at home to reduce transmission and disruption. Our full guidance includes advice for schools in relation to pupils with Covid symptoms too.

If you are having any issues in your school relating to this guidance then please urgently contact your UNISON branch.
