Plymouth in UNISON branch Secretary Kevin Treweeks was saddened to hear of the scale of the Job Losses precipitated by John Lewis’s decision to pull out of Plymouth.
This is not a sector we organise in, so our involvement is restricted to a handful of individuals who have stayed with us after changing from public service jobs, but clearly its bad news for the City as well as the individuals involved.
In some ways John Lewis decision to take their customer service back in house might be good news as I always felt that the contracted out team at Sitel were the poor relations of the company deprived of the benefits afforded to partners. However as we don’t have a John Lewis in Plymouth I doubt many of these staff will benefit from this move.
At the end or the day this is another symptom of the crisis on the high street and we will continue to show solidarity through our involvement with Plymouth Trades Council and to support the campaigns of sister unions like USDAW to keep real people in retail.
