Thanks to the efforts of UNISON health members, the government has finally improved its offer on NHS pay.
After intensive talks, the government’s offer to NHS staff in England is now a significant improvement on the 72p an hour awarded last summer.

The offer is:

  • An additional one-off lump sum for 2022/23 which rises in value up the NHS pay bands.
  • A permanent 5% pay rise on all pay points for 2023/24.
  • An increase to Band 2, raising the lowest pay point in the NHS to £11.45 an hour – 55p higher than the real Living Wage.

The Health Service Group Executive has met and voted to recommend this offer to members as the best that can be achieved by negotiation, but we understand there was a significant minority recommending rejection.

Many members have already spoken out to say that it is well short of what is needed but it remains to be seen as to if this is just a vocal minority.

All UNISON members working in the NHS should receive an email about the pay offer and details on how to vote in the consultation will be circulated soon.

If members want more they clearly need to vote in the consultation and be prepared to back up a reject vote with a mandate for action.
