There has been speculation in the media that the government in England is set to review the EYFS adult: child ratios. This has not been confirmed by the DfE, but is clearly a worrying development.

UNISON believes that reducing ratios for the youngest children is a ludicrous suggestion. The early years sector is already facing a crisis in trying to attract and retain high quality, qualified staff. Staff are already leaving the sector for less stressful work. Increasing workloads and the number of children that staff have to look after will only make this situation worse. The sector needs sustainable investment in high quality services, not de-regulation that risks both the safety of children and the quality of their care and education.

We are working with other early years organisations to campaign against any proposed changes.
